Ryan Shay

My condolences to the family of US marathoner Ryan Shay (28) who passed away after shortly embarking on the New York Marathon on 3 November 2007. It's always difficult to come to terms with sudden death in seemingly healthy young athletes. It's also a sober reminder of the fragility of life, and that we should treasure each moment that we have and share.

Most of them died because of some heart defect. Can't remember the name of this condition, but according to statistics, every 1 in 500 people are born with abnormal heart; thicker ventricle wall. Actually thicker wall does not harm a normal person much, but if we do sports too much, there may be a possibility that the heart is unable to pump efficiently due to thicker wall. That's why some runners / sportsman collapse after competition due to heart failure. So, actually we runners are advised to do echocardiogram (cardiac ultrasound) to see if our heart is normal. Scary huh? We may not know if we have it.
