BG Run III
I received 2 SMSes at around 5:50 am this morning, one from Tiwazz and one from Bee, to wake me up for the BG Run today. I got up and realised that it was raining, not very heavily, but there was rumbling of thunder and the occasional flash of lightning. Ah well, I figured that I should still go for the run, since the least we could do is to go for a group makan session if we were not able to run.
In spite of the wet weather, there was a splendid turnout at the old SMU: Tiwazz, Bee, Yankee, SportsVenturer, Dasher, Meteor, Alvo, Jamessoh, T@z, Brokie, Le_Charlotte, Cosmic_Wind, Cheow12, Cokiee and Hedgehog. There were also some new faces (to me): FattyBomBom, Nemo, Igloo, Van, Daisiki, Junie_Tang and PatrickChia.
We also met our dear Filipino running friends, Roda and company, who were at the old SMU for a Filipino Sports Meet. :) They expressed their interest in joining us for our next BG run. Cool! :)
After briefing the group, we started on our run at 7:30 am, by which time the rain had already stopped.
Not too far into the Botanic Gardens, RSM Brokie gave the orders to make a left turn which I had not planned in my route. With her powerful strides, Brokie led us through the greenery, and we enjoyed our long but scenic loop around the gardens, including the very beautiful Evolution Garden. We even bumped into RealRunner twice in the gardens! :) By the time we were done with Botanic Gardens, we had probably covered about 4-5 km.

The blue (dashed) route above was the one that I had planned. See how many more kilometres RSM Brokie made us run! ;)
From the Botanic Gardens, we went up the slope at Minden Road and did a 2.4 km loop, emerging outside Tanglin Mall. Then, we went on for about 2.7 km until we reached the Istana where we stopped for a photo-taking session. Then it was our journey back to the old SMU via Cavenagh Road (and cutting through the Newton subway station) and Bukit Timah Road.

Outside the Istana...haha, this is a very interesting photo ;)

What would a run be without the traditional footwear photo-session! :D
On total, we covered 15.2 km (a rough estimate from GoogleEarth) and about 16 km according to the footpods of some of the runners. Including rest breaks and traffic-light breaks, we took about 2 hours. Otherwise, it took us about 1 hr 30 min. We did very well, especially given that some of the runners were not long-distance runners, and given that we did a very challenging, hilly extra loop in the Botanic Gardens which was not planned for. :)
We had our breakfast at Food Haven, where I ordered a watermelon-plus-lime fruit juice (which was a foul-tasting combination, in my humble opinion) and a standard kopitiam breakfast. Seal, also joined us for breakfast. Igloo, who does sub-4 hr marathons, ordered an assortment of fruits. Maybe that's the secret to a good marathon timing ;)
