Streak

I'm now the proud owner of a pair of Pearl Izumi Streak performance cushioning racers. It's a spendid bright red with silver. Rather patriotic colours :) And incredibly lightweight too. I can't wait to try them out for a run after my 2-week reservist. In the meantime, happy National Day to all Singaporeans :)

Dark Voyage, Sharp Objects

I was quite satisfied with the following two reads: Alan Furst's Dark Voyage and Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects. Dark Voyage is a story set in the early 1940s, where Captain Eric DeHaan sails his Dutch freighter Noordendam, under the guise of a Spanish vessel Santa Rosa, across European waterways on cladestine operations against the Germans and the Russians. It is a highly credible portrayal of wartime Europe, peppered with espionage and love.

Sharp Objects, which is more disturbing, focusses on Chicago-based journalist Camille Preaker who was despatched by her agency to her hometown Wind Gap to cover the death of two young girls whose teeth had been brutally extracted by their murderer. As she investigates the story, she finds herself ensnarled by the ghosts of her past and trapped by the vices of the present: drugs, sex, alcohol and abuse. A bloodily revolting book which is hard to put down once you begin reading it.

Hellboy II

Watched Hellboy II: The Golden Army with a few friends the other day. For a Guillermo del Toro film, I had quite high expectations for the movie, but it was rather disappointing. The plot was rather flat, and character development limited. Even the action scenes weren't all that breathtaking. And there wasn't eye candy either. Still, I found Prince Nuada quite cool, minus the mouldy-tile-in-the-bathroom complexion, that is.

BG Run, July 2008

Hitched a ride from BoSe this morning, and made it down to BG in time for July's BG Run. Also present today were Oye Como Va, la_senza, le_charlotte, tiwazz, yakman, brokie, vincent, -licht and stuck. We started off late, about 0720 hrs, but proceeded steadily past the cemetary and then into MacRitchie Reservoir itself. Along the way, we ascended the Jelutong Tower for a bird's-eye-view of the green, and then went on to the ranger station where we sidetracked slightly for an uphill jog to the start of the Tree Top Walk. I got rather breathless on the remaining 5 km back to the starting point, and decided to just walk it to the end. brokie had brought along some Gatorade for everyone, so that was simply heavensent. Lunch was settled at Prata Cafe: one mushroom prata, one teh halia and one milo peng.
