Natural tendency to lean backwards
Got this off DO's blog...

There is a natural tendency by many runners to lean backwards and put on the breaks on a steeper slope. This is the worst thing to do as it increases the impact, jarring the body from the heels right through to the torso, creating stiffness and soreness in the quads, buttocks, hip flexors and lower back. Hmmm, I'm the sort who tends to lean backwards and slow my pace when I doing downhills. Maybe I should try out the above advice, and see how that feels...

Hmmm, I'm the sort who tends to lean backwards and slow my pace when I doing downhills. Maybe I should try out the above advice, and see how that feels...

leaning backwards does not increase the impact, is the way you land (heel first) and also the thinking of landing when u run that increases the impact...
leaning backwards will stress the core body and over work your leg muscles. Your legs are moving forward, working hard to overcome the backward horizontal motion cause by your lean, your core muscles trying to balance the 2 forces and keep your body intact.....
one experiment is...stand stationary, lean forward with pivot to ur ankle...u will feel that there is a forward motion and a vertical motion due to gravity..the same as backward if u want to try..the horizontal force is the same with same with different direction with the same lean....the vertical gravity force down is the same..so where is the increase in impact?
will show u one day if this is not clear...okie..u can take this as rubbish if u dun agree
maybe i misread that this is for downhill running...but when u running downhill, there is no need to think about leaning forward....keep you body and your steps low and let the gravity pull u down....
i think the article is not clear about foot-landing technique which is as important as body position which i would really like to find out.
ok, maybe I should get the book, and read it in its context (or maybe there are even diagrams)... That may give me a better understanding of what it's trying to say...
